Today in 1851, Maine became the first state in the U.S. to ban alcohol, almost 70 years before the 18th amendment kicked off Prohibition on a national level and 82 years before the 21st amendment repealed the 18th. Eighty-two years – that is a long time to be a booze-free resident of chilly, dark Maine!
In other early 20th century news, today in 1928, Kraft’s Velveeta was introduced, filling a vast need for smooth-melting processed cheese.
So today, to celebrate, melt a little cheese and have a drink – because you can.
