World Travelers Come Home: Paris & China

As I mentioned the other day, my sister just spent a long weekend in Paris. Yesterday, she got her pictures online (and returned our camera). Not surprisingly, her pictures are mainly a collection of pretty Parisian architecture and even prettier food.

Of course, this isn't traditionally beautiful:

That's the veal kidneys Erin mistakenly ate her first night in France. At the time, she thought they were testicles. Yum.

I think this is probably more typical of the food she ate while in Paris:

So delicious. Who doesn't love a crepe with nutella?

While Erin was in Paris, my friend Lindsay was traveling all over China with her MBA program. As far as I can tell, one of the quickest ways to realize you're in a really foreign culture is to just check out the food, whether it's in a restaurant or on the street or wherever:

In that last picture, the "fish" are made out of some sort of gelatinous substance. Like jello maybe. Lindsay originally thought they were chocolate. Unfortunately, she was wrong.

Looking at these pictures reminds me that it's been a long time since we've been anywhere really cool and different. We do have a couple of trips planned this year, but they're domestic. However, they are promising, from a food standpoint. At the end of April, we're going to visit some of my high school friends in Seattle (and hopefully will make it up to Vancouver while we're there) and in August we're going out to Denver for a wedding of one of Cooper's high school friends. Both cities have really strong local food movements. It'll be fun.

But I'm also ready to go back to Europe. Or to South America. If only we lived a life of leisure...

Seattle is GREAT. My family went there about 5 years ago before a cruise to Alaska. It's the only city I think my parents were comfortable just letting my sisters and I walk around by ourselves.

The market there is wonderful. We went and saw them throw fish directly from the boat into the stalls. Very cool city.
