More Reasons Why Rachael Ray Sucks

I haven't been overly vocal about this lately, but really, really, really dislike Rachael Ray. Her food, her voice, her weird way of wearing too-tight shirts.

Some celebrities I wish I could be friends with. Barefoot Contessa. Anthony Bourdain. Even Reese Witherspoon. Ray-Ray brings out the opposite in me. I kind of wish I'd gone to high school with her just so I could've said mean things about her at a time when it was socially acceptable to be cruel.

Anyway. I like her even less today than I did yesterday. She accepts money from Dunkin Donuts - but refuses to drink their coffee.

My issues with this: a) How wildly hypocritical. It's not like she was starving before she got that endorsement deal.. She could've turned it down if she wasn't into the product; b) Has she tasted all of her OWN cooking? I'm sure some of her recipes are good, but she dishes up a lot of crap, too; and c) Dunkin Donuts coffee is delicious. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I will take down a cup of their liquid crack any day.

OK, that's it. Heart rate's back down. Rant is over.

UPDATE 2/12/08: I realize that this is an old post, so it's possible that nobody will see this update, but I just have to note something funny. I got a new comment here tonight - an ANTI-Rachael sucking comment that mentions that if we don't like her we don't have to watch her. Obviously, but she's also pretty ubiquitous these days.

But I digress. What's funny about the comment is that I had a hunch, so I looked up the web search that sent the reader here. And I was right - it was a Google search for "Rachael Ray sucks".

I'm the one who needs to "Get a life!!!"? The minute I start googling contrary blog posts just so I can post anomymous comments is the minute I will, officially, worry that I don't have enough going on in my non-internet world...

UPDATE #2 2/22/08: Her husband is so icky - and I kind of thought they were splitting up? But I do sort of think her dress is cute...

UPDATE #3 9/11/08: More of an announcement than anything else. Comments are great, even when they're slamming me. But I will delete comments with lots of bad language. It's not how I write, and it's not something I want on the blog.

No - thank YOU! I was actually feeling a little guilty. But I'll stop.

She is just too perky to be true, really annoying. Why is she so wildly popular? Do most people love perky?

Kit Pollard said...

I guess. I don't know...the weird thing is, I don't really know anybody who actually likes her, som I'm not really sure who's boosting her popularity.

Oh, wait. Except my father-in-law. He has this HUGE crush on her that the rest of the family thinks is hilarious.

Why waste SO much energy on "hate"!! I appreciate your "right" to free speech, but that's why there's there is a channel changer. You all seem to know alot about RR to hate her so much. "Me thinks thou doth protest too much". Get a life!!!!

No, really Kit ....GET A LIFE!!

Tonight she flitted around in her high-waisted pants through an entire episode of recipes specifically to make your friends who just had a baby. I was thinking, ok... maybe she's going to make pink frosted cupcakes, or something remotely "babyish." I dunno. She glopped together some "ravioli lasagne," that ended up looking like gravy topped casserole and some orange scented broccoli and colly-flower. YUMMO. All the way through she was gesturing at inappropriate moments, making her weird faces, strange abbreviations, typical Rachael Ray stuff. I typed in "Rachael Ray sucks" and stumbled upon your page. Glad to know I'm not the only one who notices her weird behavior.

I agree with your comments about her. One thing that bothers me is she and other cooks on television wear rings while cooking. All the crap gets in the prongs and in the spots where the crud just accumulates. I also hate that Rachael fries bacon in EVOO, thats extra virgin olive oil in case you didn't know. Frying bacon makes a lot of grease. Why must she add more fat before frying. Oh, I forgot, EVOO, that's extra virgin olive oil in case you didn't know, is a good fat. Um, it's still a fat you don't need in order to fry bacon. Oh I could go on and on...

Kit Pollard said...

I'd never noticed the thing about the rings before (probably because I don't actually watch the show...) - but that's a great point. I ALWAYS take my rings off when I'm cooking, just because it's so gross otherwise!

Glorious rant. I belong to the RRSUX community because she needs to be stopped. She claims her oil, bacon and cheese laden crap is healthy, has pledged to combat obesity yet shills for Dunkin Donuts. Even if I turn her off she is still out there dumbing America down.

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that many of the Rachael Ray lovers/followers are people who don't have a lot of experience in the kitchen. Not that, that is any great surprise. Her recipes are pretty basic.

The problem is that it seems that many people don't research things properly. They accept what a person says on TV as gospel. In other words lemming/sheepish behavior.

That IMO, applies to a variety of television personalities. That some viewers some how develop an attachment to these personalities and the viewers some how lose their objectivity.

I do all that I can to avoid Rachael Ray products and television shows, and believe me, that is not easy. I understand the concept of striking while the iron is hot, but not when the iron is molten. I understand the concept of taking advantage of every opportunity that one has, because who knows when the next opportunity will arise. That being said, I really think that Rachael needs to re-evaluate how much exposure she is getting. Has she ever turned any opportunity down?

As far as the RRsux community goes. Yeah, I have read there often and have never joined. If they really want to inform people about their issues with Rachael, they would be better off talking with those people in a constructive manner.

I don't know any people that will alter their viewpoint if they feel as though they are being insulted or talked down to. Putting people on the defensive is not constructive. That community is far better off discussing the issues they have with Rachael in a positive manner. It may not change anything, but putting someone on the defensive sure won't change a thing.

I have problems with the way she is so repetitive, hair hanging on top of the food, nails uneven and dirty, and plus: her recipes sucks!

Kit Pollard said...

To 1:15 - I could be wrong about this - I haven't spent a lot of time on the RRSUX community website, but I was sort of under the impression that it's purpose was more to vent and then laugh than it was to actually change anything.

Because, really, I'm pretty sure the only way RR will change her approach or overall brand is if people stop paying to buy her magazines and books and products and stop watching her shows...

Anonymous said...

I joined the community to vent my frustrations but I think a lot of people troll the website regularly, so I try to expose her hypocrisy and her lack of knowledge in cooking.
There was an article on NY times last year about how Food Network's rating has plummeted but for some reason they gave her another show so I don't know what can stop her. I sure don't buy anything with her face plastered on it and I barely watch FN anymore. Oh, and I don't let my friends buy RR's product. I point them to Alton Brown or Ina Garten's cookbooks instead.
I know we probably won't make that much of a difference but maybe there are people out there who will see the light. :-)

Kit Pollard said...

That's the thing...for all FN's faults, they are still the home of the Barefoot Contessa. Her recipes are so good, yet so simple. If she had a talk show, magazine and major endorsement deals, I'd feel very differently about the network as a whole...

Rachael is a very successful woman no matter what you all say about her. If fact, these ridiculous hate blogs make her even more famous, which kind of defeats the purpose of trying to bring her down. I'm sure she gets a kick out of the simple fact that ppl around america actually take the time to sit in front of their computers and blog about how they hate her but yet watch her shows and pay attention to every detail, like how she filed her nails or made gestures. All of you need a life and i mean it. Dont like it, dont watch it. Dont like the recipes? then dont make it. Stop wasting yalls energy blogging about her, because at the end of the day shes the one with successful jobs just for being herself. Worry about your own lives...and stop talking about others.

Rachael made a career out of her passion for food- what is so bad about that? I say GO GIRL !
She loves what she does and it radiates in her beautiful smile everyday-

So Rach keep going and I applaud your success and I thank you for sharing your passion with the world- those who love you do and those who don't could change the channel and just shut up !!

People, the reason you waste your time criticising Rachel - because you are all jealous of her success. Look, she's got the show - you don't. She's got the books - you don't. She's got the magazine, and you don't. You are the one who sucks!
You waste you time hanging around waiting for others to make a mistake, and she is the real doer of the world. She's too busy doing, making progress and succesful. So, get your own life!
And become another succesful Rachel Ray!

Before you say I was googleing 'Rachel Ray Sucks' I was actually trying to source the orange cooker/range she has on her set... and came across your blog!... wow it's nasty. I live in Ireland and Rachel Rays show is shown here.. and loved by many. She is lively and entertaining and in spite of ourselves we are saying E V O O .... I think it's nice to have a bit of happiness in todays world and think its a great pity that you feel the need to post something so negative.

I'm glad your morals are so high-- you're willing to do something just because it's socially acceptable. Honestly get a backbone and grow some charactor.

You must be jealous of her fame or something. Cuz honestly, she's become so successful, and you're just one of those people that can't celebrate anyone's success other than your own.

And try being a famous person where people critique your every move. You can't please everyone..And I say Go Rachel Ray!! You're awesome Rachel!!

Wow.. a little hypercritical

Contrary to what one poster said, I hate her, but I don't hate her because of her success, I am boggled and totally confused by it. Annoying personality, strange quirks, stupid abbreviations, (evoo- why say it if you feel the need to explain it every single time!- yummo,
sammies), and VILE recipes. And the stories about working at Howard Johnson's and sticking her fingers in the ice cream to pick out the fruit and nuts, yuck! no wonder they went under. She even says her mther worked there as manager and did the same thing! Obviously a family with high standards of sanitation-just the type that should choose food service as a career.
So far as being cute, sure, but a little grooming and fewer weird facial expressions would go far. . .
I also think it's telling that her staunchest supporter in this thread is a less-than-grade-level- literate 10 year-old. No offense intended to the fifth grader, but it is never too early to learn some spelling and grammar.
As far as RR is concerned, it's never too late to learn to cook well.

You hate Rachel Ray... wow why cuz she won’t fight you back and you can be as hateful as you want! I sought you would say it to her face! Your blog sucks and stands for nothing! You don’t stand for hate, your just a hater who stands for nothing!

Anonymous said...

From what I understand, Ray is a fairly generous with her money and her success. She came from a regular "Joe" background, she readily admits she is an unqualified background to do what she does for a living. She doesn't seem to be a pretender to the throne so to speak. In my opinion, most of her recipes are not for a recovering heart attack or stroke patient. She is definitely not a teacher and I don't expect her to be one. Most of the meals she makes are for the dimestore diner crowds. When her personality becomes overwhelming I grab my remote and change the channel. She obviously has something because Oprah saw something on her which prompted her to support her show. I think most people are envious of her success. So she shills for Dunkin Donuts, it's a paycheck. She has never claimed to be a dietary guru.

Unknown said...

She laughs at everything, she's a royal kiss ass,her husband needs to manscape, her recipes are the same thing over and over again.shes doesn't bake, she talks over her guest stars she's never had an original recipe.

You need to get a life. It's a sign of low intelligence to have to promote yourself by degrading someone else. Make sure you delete this (as you've done with other comments) as it's obvious you can't handle the truth.

PART 1/2

"You hate Rachel Ray... wow why cuz she won’t fight you back and you can be as hateful as you want! I sought you would say it to her face! Your blog sucks and stands for nothing! You don’t stand for hate, your just a hater who stands for nothing!"

*****

Wow! The immaturity is strong here, folks...just like the other "Unknown" and "Anonymous" posters on this blog who are attacking Kit for DARING to have a negative opinion about a woman they love who's more likely than not had harsher, nastier criticism thrown her way. Not to mention that this poster is repetitious as all else in accusing Kit and her blog for "standing for nothing!" when this post is more likely than not the only one the person has bothered to read. Oh, and "cuz" instead of "because" and "sought" rather than "thought?" Come on! Being rude and obnoxious and resorting to ad hominem attacks (or attacks of any kind) is one thing, but nothing screams "Don't take me seriously" like poor spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Either show some literacy or don’t post at all.

Seriously, I know I'm late to the party when it comes to speaking out against Rachel Ray's defenders, but really, you guys are every bit as childish, classless, and flat-out insolent as you're accusing Kit here of being. You want to criticize her point of view and point out where the fault lies in her way of thinking? That's one thing. Mounting personal attacks against her by telling her that her blog "sucks," accusing her of having “low intelligence” or "no real skills or talant" (as opposed to "talent") and of being "jealous" of Rachel's success (maybe for other, better chefs and Food Network hosts, but for herself? I doubt it.), telling her to "shut up !!" and "GET A LIFE!!" (complete with multiple exclamation points, no less), and by insisting that she's the one who "sucks" is simply lazy, cheap, unoriginal, and even hypocritical. "If you don't like it, don't watch it." Yeah. No kidding. Take your own advice and stop going out of your way to look up Rachel Ray critics to bash, which is what you people are clearly doing. Otherwise, none of you would have ever posted what you had in defense of your beloved celebrity queen. People are allowed to vent about [Insert Public Figure X’s name here.] if PF-X happens to say or do something that needs to be called out for legitimate reasons (e.g., Rachel Ray’s apparently poor food prep hygiene, from her dirty fingernails and her hair allegedly dangling in the food she makes). Don’t like what Blogger X has to say? Guess what: You have the right to blow the person off. Going out of your way to mount a counterattack, though? Not an option worth taking…unless you’re begging to put your insecurity, hypocrisy, and juvenility on full display on the WORLD WIDE WEB for the masses to see and/or hear.

PART 2/2

Personally, I’ve never bought or used any product with Ms. Ray’s name or face on it, nor will I ever, and the only time I’ve ever watched her show is when my mother showed me a recipe that the woman was making that she thought I might enjoy. That said, one criticism that I do have for Rachel from my experience with her is her constant need to use ‘literally” to emphasize the importance of what she’s trying to say, which is one of the most grating, insulting, condescending, superficial, and utterly unnecessary vocal habits still going on today in 2023. In fact, as much as certain members of the anti-“literally” crowd love to bash Kim Kardashian and the rest of her family for their own contributions in spreading this disease of a verbal fad around like COVID-19 during the 2020 pandemic, Rachel was dropping L-bombs left, right, and center before anyone even dared to notice the Kardashians of doing the same thing, much less hold Kim and family accountable of their ever-incessantly spreading application. Sadly, nobody had the brains or backbone to tell Ms. Ray, either, to knock it off with her own addiction to “literally” until fairly recently, and yet, we all had to wait until the 2010s for the masses to FINALLY speak out against the bastardization of ‘literally” in general—a mess that should have handled once and for all CENTURIES ago when people first started using “literally” as an intensive. That in mind, thanks a lot, Rachel Ray, for passing your own strand of Chris Traeger’s disease on to my mother right alongside Ellen DeGeneres and all the personalities from Pawn Stars, Counting Cars, American Pickers, American Restoration, and countless other reality TV programs. Now she’s as bad about using “literally” as the stereotypical Millennial is said to be. Hope you’re happy!

Bottom line, folks, if people have legitimate gripes about certain public figures—or, for that matter, certain forms of entertainment or other products—let them have their say and don’t go out of your way to accuse them of being “haters” or otherwise attack them for their preferences. You’ll only end up passing a double standard in the process by stooping to the other person’s level (if not, in fact, lower) and looking oversensitive and callow in the process, which is in no small part how America’s current culture war(s) started in the first place.
